Find your flow by letting your inner editor go

Practicing before you need to use a skill is an effective way to get it into your mind and body

Beyond the witty title, how does Velvet’s class help performers build their improvisational skills?

Here are thoughts from a shortform, longform, and applied perspective

If you already love playing short form improv games:

  1. You can quickly adopt charactersations that fit the moment both as lead and in support
  2. You can play with nuance — being obvious, subtle, or bombastic, without impeding other performers or breaking the format
  3. You can take the games to your very next show!

For longform performers:

  1. Accepting new offers as a way to deepen and expand your character’s points of view
  2. Incorporating nonverbal offers as part of narrative discovery and heightening
  3. Accepting direction as a plot offer, not commentary on your skillset

Practical skills you can use offstage:

  • Active listening to include facial, body, and emotional reactions
  • Staying present in the moment in the face of uncertainty
  • Overcoming decision paralysis by focusing on first choices
