Premise
One of Anansi’s sons seeks a closer relationship with carefree and independent Anansi, while the latter resists changing their dynamic. How then does someone renowned for wisdom and eloquence also learn to truly listen?
“Anansi Discovers His Reflection” is my love letter to Trickster folklore, combined with my continued exploration of devised theatre – incorporating music, projection, and puppetry. I will embed three life lessons in this new parable: “Be patient”, “Be open”, and “Be authentic.” By examining Anansi’s responses, someone who is bigger than life and a spider, it is easier to ensure the content isn’t Black trauma porn for the colonial gaze.
